You maybe in the majority of people who have never given the type of water coming out of your faucet a second thought. To be completely honest, I didn’t give it much thought until I became a hairdresser. But what is the difference between hard and soft water you maybe asking yourself?
Hard water is generally determine by the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. You may notice that it is difficult to create a sudsy lather when washing your hair in hard water. The soap reacts with the calcium (which can be relatively high in hard water) to form “soap scum”. Also when you are using hard water you will end up using more product to achieve the same results. Hard water is even known to make it more difficult to retain your hair color and cause it to turn brassy faster.
Some Home Remedies are:
Use a clarifying shampoo
Create a vinegar rinse (1 tablespoon vinegar and 3 cups water)
Rinse with bottled or filter water
Or the best option out there is to GET A WATER FILTER! Contact a residential water treatment expert near you for more information on installing a water filter that’s right for you.
